What your shed roof slope actually controls

🌧️
3:12 minimum for shingles

Slope & Water Drainage

Slope is the single biggest factor in how quickly water leaves your roof. At 1:12, water barely moves — only metal and EPDM membranes are reliable. At 3:12, asphalt shingles work but require special low-slope installation. At 4:12 and above, all standard roofing materials perform as designed.

📐
Rise + Run = Rafter length

How Rafter Length Is Calculated

Rafter length is calculated using the Pythagorean theorem: rafter = √(rise² + run²). For a 4:12 pitch over a 12-foot run, rise = 4 feet, so rafter = √(16 + 144) = √160 ≈ 12.65 feet. Always add your overhang length to the line length before ordering lumber.

🪵
Pitch multiplier × footprint = area

True Roof Area vs Floor Area

A sloped roof covers more surface area than the floor footprint beneath it. The pitch multiplier (√((rise/run)² + 1)) converts flat area to true area. At 4:12, the multiplier is 1.054. Always order based on true area, never footprint.

FAQ

Shed roof questions answered.

Common questions about shed roof slopes, pitches and materials — answered clearly.

A 3:12 to 4:12 pitch is the sweet spot for most shed builds. It provides reliable drainage, works with all standard materials including asphalt shingles, and doesn't require excessively tall walls. In heavy snow regions, increase to 6:12 or steeper.
Rafter length = √(rise² + run²). For a 12-foot shed at 4:12 pitch: rafter = √(4² + 12²) = √160 ≈ 12.65 feet. Add your eave overhang (typically 12–18 inches) to get the actual board length.
Metal panels: 1:12 minimum. Asphalt shingles: 2:12 with special underlayment, 4:12 standard. EPDM rubber: near flat. For most DIY builders, 3:12 is the recommended minimum for reliable drainage.
Use: angle = arctan(rise ÷ run). Common: 1:12 = 4.8°, 3:12 = 14.0°, 4:12 = 18.4°, 6:12 = 26.6°, 12:12 = 45°. The calculator does this automatically.
The pitch multiplier (√((rise/run)² + 1)) converts your floor footprint to actual sloped roof area. At 4:12, multiplier = 1.054 — a 120 sq ft footprint = ~126 sq ft of roofing material. Always order based on true area. Add 10–15% for waste.
16" OC is the most common for sheds. 24" OC suits lightweight metal or polycarbonate. 12" OC handles heavy loads or snow.
Set the tongue (short arm) at the rise value, body (long arm) at 12. The tongue edge gives your plumb cut; the body edge gives your seat cut. For 4:12: set tongue at 4, body at 12.
