How Much Should You Tip a Hairdresser?

Whether you're getting a simple trim, a blowout, or a full balayage color treatment, salon etiquette in the US and Canada heavily relies on tipping. The standard rule of thumb is quite simple:

  • Standard Tip: 20% — the industry baseline for good service.
  • Exceptional Service: 25% — if your stylist worked a miracle, accommodated a late arrival, or spent 4 hours on complex color corrections.
  • Basic/Okay Service: 15–18% — dropping below 15% is generally frowned upon unless the service was actively terrible.

What About the Shampoo Assistant?

If someone other than your primary stylist washed your hair, gave you a scalp massage, or helped blow-dry, do not assume they get a cut of the stylist's tip.

You should tip an assistant directly — the standard is $3 to $5 in cash. Hand it to them on your way out or leave it at the front desk with their name on it.

Do You Tip the Salon Owner?

Decades ago, etiquette dictated you should never tip the owner. This rule is dead. If the salon owner is the one cutting your hair, modern etiquette suggests you tip them just as you would any commissioned stylist (15–20%).

Salon Tipping FAQs

Technically, proper etiquette says you only need to tip on the pre-tax cost of the service. However, finding the pre-tax number is annoying for most people, so tipping on the final bill total is extremely common and always appreciated.
No. You only tip on the service rendered. If your haircut is $100 and you buy $80 worth of shampoo, calculate your tip based only on the $100 service fee — not the combined total.
Yes. While most modern salons allow you to add a tip to your credit card, cash is always king in the service industry. It ensures the stylist gets their tip immediately without credit card processing fees taken out.
The percentage doesn't change — 20% is standard for both. But since color services cost significantly more, the actual dollar amount you tip will be much higher. A $250 balayage at 20% means a $50 tip, which is appropriate given the skill and time involved.
If you're genuinely unhappy, speak with the manager and consider tipping 10–15% instead of nothing. Leaving no tip at all sends a strong message but can create awkwardness. Most stylists rely heavily on tips as a significant part of their income.
